‘A Small Light’ Review: A Profile in Extreme Courage

This is far from a “life is beautiful” situation, but there is an undeniable disagreement. While the anguish of the Franks and their friends Van Perses and Fritz Pfeffer is treated with sufficient seriousness, the story also sees Miep and Jan meet cutely at a jazz club and reunite in a Technicolor tulip field. or (A rural reunion in a field that was previously seen being fertilized is a good indicator of the series’ audience-pleasing instincts. It’s a nasal metaphor for renewal, and for fertilizing. It’s also part of an ongoing gag.)

Another way to look at the texture of the show is the serious attempts made with complex combinations of tones. It’s like a seasoned director is more likely to work in a shorter time frame. Here, it’s run by a committee, and while it’s done deftly, it doesn’t have the subtlety or imagination to do the story full justice.

But “A Small Light” has moments, especially in the first two episodes and at the end, that deliver on promises and suddenly and unexpectedly bring tears to your eyes. They are delivered by Liev Schreiber, who delivers an utterly incredible and exquisitely modulated performance as Otto Frank. , everything Schreiber wants us to know about Frank is clear.

Much of “A Little Light” is devoted to the relationship between Miep and Yang, but its strongest emotional arc is the growing friendship and trust between her and Otto. is dominated by scenes of (albeit well-directed) mayhem and tragedy, but its best moments are the quieter dialogues in which Schreiber and Pauly provide the emotional shading and complexity of the actual drama. (Powley’s performance takes on a higher level each time he’s alone with Schreiber.)

Otto’s place in the story recedes midway through the series after Frank goes into hiding. It uses expressions to convey the destruction of the camp. It may seem like a minimal effort, but given the containment of his performance, Schreiber sees Otto as both a mensch and a man. have succeeded in
