AMD Radeon RX 6800 Drops to $469 as RTX 4070 Arrives

AMD hit back at the launch of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4070 today with significant price cuts on its mid-range and top-end RX 6000 series graphics cards. Competing favorably with the RTX 4070 in terms of performance, the RX 6000 series GPUs are discounted by up to $110 off their suggested retail price.
These new price cuts come furiously after AMD’s attack on Nvidia’s stingy VRAM, which was released just before the RTX 4070 review went live yesterday. Now AMD has added an extra discount to its RX 6800 series graphics cards to compete with his RTX 4070.
AMD’s discount represents some serious competition for Nvidia’s RTX 4070. Both the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT have seen discounts ranging from $30 to $50 on various AIB partner cards, with the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT retailing for $110 below MSRP. In other words, the RX 6800 XT is $539 (opens in new tab)and for RX 6800 $469 (opens in new tab).
As a top cherry, AMD is still selling the previous generation flagship RX 6950XT as well $9 (opens in new tab) Exceeding the 4070’s MSRP with excellent rasterized gaming performance.
graphic card | discounted price | seller |
Gigabyte RX 6800 Gaming | $469.99 | new egg |
ASRock RX 6800 XT Phantom Gaming D | $539.99 | new egg |
ASRock RX 6950 XT Phantom Gaming | $609.99 | new egg |
AMD’s price cut strategically applies to the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT only. Both GPUs sit right next to the RTX 4070 in terms of performance, offering very similar frame rates at 1440P when ray tracing is not used based on the 4070’s review. Almost the same framerate. The RX 6800 is a little slower, but not by much. With a lot of overclocking, the performance could rival the 4070.
In terms of value, the $539 RX 6800 XT offers RTX 4070 performance at 90% of the price. The RX 6800 offers 90% the performance of the RTX 4070, but at a price of 72.2%, or a 28% discount.
At these price points, AMD’s previous generation RX 6800 series cards could be a good alternative to the RTX 4070 for gamers who don’t mind cutting-edge hardware.
