AMD Rearchitects OpenGL Driver for a 72% Performance Uplift

On Thursday, AMD published a blog post claiming that the latest AMD Software: Pro Edition 22.Q3 drivers improved performance for OpenGL applications by up to 72%. This driver technically addresses his AMD professional graphics cards, but also supports his high-end Radeon RX 6000 series graphics boards. Additionally, the new OpenGL driver architecture is already present in his AMD drivers for consumer boards.

AMD has long been criticized for its mediocre OpenGL drivers, as its graphics processors lagged Nvidia’s equivalent GPUs in OpenGL-based games and professional applications. Over the years, the company has attempted at least a few redesigns of his OpenGL software. However, Nvidia GPUs still excelled in software (gaming and professional applications) as they relied on this application programming interface. But this time AMD says they have completely redesigned their OpenGL drivers. This will improve GPU performance by 2% ~ 115%, depending on the actual graphics board and workload. AMD says the Radeon W6800 is faster than his Nvidia’s RTX A5000 graphics board in some applications.

“Release of AMD Software: Pro Edition 22.Q3 (opens in new tab) […] brings the most significant performance improvements ever across all OpenGL applications and many other favorite creation, design, modeling and CAD software applications. ” statement (opens in new tab) By AMD reading. “We’ve taken OpenGL rebuilt and tuned it to improve the performance of OpenGL-based Creator and CAD applications such as Autodesk Maya. It’s up to 72% better than the previous driver and up to 41% better than the competition. % Improving: The latest drivers continue to improve performance in non-OpenGL applications, up to 72% better than the competition.”

Fewer people use professional visualization (ProViz) applications than they play games, for obvious reasons. So the best part is that AMD has already implemented OpenGL improvements in his existing Adrenalin drivers, so gamers still playing OpenGL games can take advantage of the improvements. Additionally, users using his ProViz application on his consumer-grade Radeon (e.g. Radeon RX 6950 XT) will be able to try out the new drivers for better performance. These boards are not certified by the developers of Proviz software, but if they work faster with newer drivers, that’s good.

“This new [OpenGL driver] The AMD architecture was first introduced to consumers with AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 22.7.1 in July 2022,” said AMD.

New AMD Software: Pro Edition 22.Q3 drivers are certified by developers of popular CAD, CAM and DCC applications as well as tested and approved by Dell, HP and Lenovo for stability (Owners of suitable workstations should download the driver). from his website of the PC manufacturer).
