AMD RX 7900 XTX Geekbench 5 Vulkan Results Match RTX 4080
A performance leak for AMD’s upcoming Radeon RX 7900 XTX was recently shared and featured on Twitter by @BenchLeaks. OpenCL When Vulkan Calculated Score In Geekbench 5. The RDNA3 GPU showed very good results in the Vulkan benchmark, delivering similar performance to Nvidia’s RTX 4080. OpenCL results aren’t as promising, but Geekbench isn’t the best indicator of real-world gaming performance in general, but it still supports AMD’s claim that the RX 7900 XTX competes well with his Nvidia RTX 4080. .
The Radeon RX 7900 XTX scored 179,579 on the Geekbench 5 Vulkan benchmark and scored 228,647 points on the OpenCL benchmark. This puts the RX 7900 XTX on par with the RTX 4080’s Vulkan score of 178,105 points, only 0.8% slower than the 7900 XTX. However, the 7900 XTX lags behind the RTX 4080 in the OpenCL benchmarks, with the RTX 4080 scoring 264,482 points, which is 15.7% faster than the RX 7900 XTX.
The following 4080 and 4090 scores are taken from many user uploads in Geekbench 5 browsers and average to one value. Unfortunately, we had to do this because Geekbench 5 doesn’t have official RTX 40 Series Compute benchmark scores to compare with.
GPU model | Balkan | Open CL | Vulkan performance differences | Differences in OpenCL performance |
RX7900XTX | 179,579 | 228,647 | Base line | Base line |
RTX4080 | 178,105 | 264,482 | 0.8% slower | 15.7% faster |
RTX4090 | 203,916 | 344,806 | 14% faster | 50% faster |
The RX 7900 XTX’s results aren’t all that surprising, as AMD’s recent GPU architectures rarely match their Nvidia counterparts in terms of raw compute as measured by OpenCL. The workload shows competitive results from the previous RX 6000 series and we see the same trend here.
The performance characteristics of the 7900 XTX on Vulkan are particularly interesting against the RTX 4080. AMD has said in the past that the 7900 XTX is not meant to compete with Nvidia’s 4090, but rather against Nvidia’s second-placed RTX 4080 GPU. We’re not sure if this was AMD’s intention, but in any case, the Geekbench 5 Vulkan results we see here today certainly support that statement.
Thankfully, it won’t be long before we have our own full test results. AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT will launch on his December 13th, just one week away. Stay tuned for our official review on how the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT perform in a wide range of benchmarks compared to Nvidia’s RTX 4080 and many other GPUs.
