AMD’s Radeon RX 6600 Emerges In MXM Form Factor
One of the best graphics cards on the market, the Radeon RX 6600 comes in the unusual MXM (Mobile PCI Express Module) form factor.Editor surface dock guy (opens in new tab) somehow got a Radeon RX 6600 MXM, took it apart and looked inside. The MXM form factor is typically used inside laptops, but this particular Radeon RX 6600 module is probably for eGPU enclosures or servers that accept the format.
At the heart of the Radeon RX 6600 is 237 mm² of AMD’s Navi 23 silicon. Tandem. So it is plausible that 7 phases power the Vcore and the remaining 3 phases serve GDDR6 or SoC. Additionally, an integrated OnSemi 55A power stage manages each phase, as SurfaceDockGuy figures out. Therefore, HIS (Hightech Information System Limited) appears to be the manufacturer of the Radeon RX 6600 MXM.
According to the Redditor, the AMD driver detects the MXM as a standard Radeon RX 6600, so the number of stream processors stays the same. Additionally, it comes with four 16Gb Micron GDDR6 memory modules. However, given the compact form factor, the TDP is significantly lower. The firmware reportedly fixes the TDP to 75W. For comparison, the desktop Radeon RX 6600 has a 132W TDP, while the mobile Radeon RX 6600M is 100W. The MXM variant is therefore the slowest of the trio. However, Redditors can lift the power cap and set the TDP beyond 130W via MorePowerTool, a popular Radeon tweaking and overclocking tool.
SurfaceDockGuy did not provide benchmark results for the Radeon RX 6600 MXM. However, he claims it matches the performance of the desktop Radeon RX 6600. So it makes sense that the Redditor pushed his MXM over his 130W. This puts it in the same alley as his regular Radeon RX 6600 rated at 132W TDP.
The Radeon RX 6600 MXM comes with a cooling system consisting of a heatsink, three copper heat pipes and a small 40mm cooling fan from FirstD. SurfaceDockGuy stressed that the performance is on par with his desktop Radeon RX 6600 with three times the heatsink and two cooling fans. There are no fan headers on the PCB, so the 40mm fan connects to the host controller board behind his MXM interface.
It’s no surprise that vendors still offer the latest generation of graphics cards in MXM format. There are several Nvidia Ampere MXM products on the market, but they target the professional market with models like his RTX A4500 and RTX A2000. Thus, it is the first time that one of his gaming graphics cards, AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 (Big Navi), has appeared in his MXM form factor.
