‘Better Call Saul’: Jonathan Banks Says Goodbye to Mike

Was there a time when your relationship with a role turned into ownership?

yes.the mic is myThe mic is mine. I nearly choked for a second when you asked it. To be honest, come to think of it, maybe Mike changed Johnny, too.

I think Jonathan Banks is a little quieter and less rambunctious playing Mike. When he says he’s silent, I mean he listens a little more than he did 12 or 13 years ago. I don’t like to use the word witness, but it comes to mind. I think he probably influenced me in that I was a little more patient. Maybe it will come with age anyway.

Have you ever received a script and thought, ‘I won’t do a mic’?

There were moments when I was like, ‘Oh, Mike wouldn’t do that. But honestly, it often made sense if I let them do what the writers were telling me.

The first that comes to mind is “Breaking Bad,” in which Mike left his granddaughter in the park and had to run away. And I was like, ‘No, Mikey will never leave his granddaughter. And the reason, of course, is the police station – they’re in the park. They take care of her and return her to her mother. It still hurts Mike to leave his granddaughter at the park.

There’s a scene in last season’s ‘Better Call Saul’ where Mike reads ‘The Little Prince’ to his granddaughter, Kayleigh. The Little Prince says, “My flowers are fleeting, and I have only four thorns to protect me from the world.” What do you think this scene means for Mike?
