Binance says someone used ChatGPT to accuse CZ of ties to CCP

Based on a May 1st report, with the help of ChatGPT, an unknown party fabricated a rumor that Binance’s CEO is linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

ChatGPT gets information from fake pages

according to luckunknown sources spread misinformation to various parties, including Congress. These parties then sent letters to Binance asking whether CEO Changpeng Zhao maintained ties with the CCP. I asked

Their request cited conversations from ChatGPT as proof of Zhao’s CCP connections. Binance was eventually able to reproduce the conversation in question, and his CSO at Binance, Patrick Hillman, shared a log of the conversation on his Twitter.

hillmans ChatGPT logs Zhao explicitly claims to have been a member of the Youth League Committee of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) in the 1990s. The log also suggests that Zhao worked as a software developer for his CNPC.

ChatGPT cited two URLs as evidence for its claims. One URL points to a nonexistent LinkedIn page that does not match Zhao’s official profile. Another URL is “Crypto King, Meet the Quiet Crypto Crusader With [a] The $700 Million War Chest, which is attributed to former Forbes author Pamela Ambler, does not exist.

no evidence found [the Forbes] There has never been a story or a LinkedIn page,” Hillman wrote on the event’s Twitter account.

Zhao’s actual LinkedIn profile does not indicate that he worked for CNPC. Also, work history prior to 2001 is not included.

Binance’s ties to China were previously questioned

Binance has previously been the target of similar accusations. In September 2022, Zhao denied accusations that his Guangying Chen, a Binance executive, was an agent of the Chinese government. He also said that Binance is not incorporated in China.

Then, on March 29, 2023, the Financial Times published an article suggesting that Binance hid its presence in China after obtaining internal documents. Zhao likewise denied these allegations without offering any specific counterarguments.

But today’s incident is a novelty due to the fact that the main source of rumors was AI. As with any new technology, Hillman acknowledges that “bad guys” abuse AI.

He also mentioned that Binance itself uses AI for constructive purposes.
