ChatGPT Comes to Minecraft AI Mobs, Here’s How to Talk to Them
Today, AI chatbots seem to be everywhere, from search engines to online stores. You can expect most games soon to use LLMs (Large Language Models) such as his GPT-4 to make NPCs more lifelike. Also, if you’re playing the Java version of Minecraft, you can now include AI chat with your mod of choice.
Our current favorite Minecraft AI mod is AI mobs (opens in new tab), you can talk to individual mobs (NPC terminology in Minecraft). You can talk to an Enderman, Creeper, Sheep, Villager, Cow, or anything living (or undead) that will tell you specific things about itself. For example, they told me that iron golems are magical creatures, not robots. You can also ask more general Minecraft or non-Minecraft questions and Mob will answer them.
However, please note that you can only chat. You can get mobs to help you with your work, but that’s just giving advice. For example, I asked Axolotl for Netherite, and he said I could find it in Nether. If you don’t want to chat with mobs, but do ChatGPT available in Minecraft’s chat feature, another mod called MCChatGPT (opens in new tab) provide that service.
Below I will show you how to install and use both AIMobs and MCChatGPT to get AI / ChatGPT functionality in Minecraft Java Edition. To use either of these, you need:
Minecraft AI / ChatGPT: What You Need
- OpenAI API key: Sign up for a free account on OpenAI and Register an API key (opens in new tab) at that site. You have to pay to use the API key, but you may get a small amount of free credits when you sign up. Depending on the amount of chats, the cost can be very small. I have used up $0.70 worth of API credits in all Minecraft chats writing this tutorial.
- Minecraft Java Edition: This only works in Java Edition, not in Bedrock.
- AT Launcher: you can get Click here for AT Launcher (opens in new tab).
How to get ChatGPT in Minecraft using AIMobs
AIMobs works on the principle that you can talk to individual mobs in Minecraft and provide customized answers for that mob type. For example, when I asked Axolotl if he wanted to go back to the sea, he replied, “That’s very nice. I want to see the sea again.” When I spoke to the zombie, he said, “I want you to find a brain to satisfy your hunger.”
However, mobs can only talk and seem happily unaware of what is really going on with you or them. did not. Conversations also continued with dead mobs and mobs miles away on the other side of the world.
You can talk to any mob by Shift-clicking on the mob to initiate a chat conversation (always available by pressing ‘t’). Even if you walk away or kill a mob, the conversation doesn’t end until you type “bye”. Here’s how AIMob is set up:
