Grand Tournaments can be used to improve your social standing and military strength. On the Grand Tour, players can increase their status among their vassals (or extort them for higher taxes). The grand wedding is both a demonstration of power and a calculated political intrigue.
Of course, leaving an ambitious regent at home can itself be dangerous, so vacating the castle to attend these functions carries a certain amount of risk.
