Dead Space Was the Best-Selling New Game in the U.S. in January 2023
Dead Space was the best-selling new video game in the US in January, according to the latest statistics from The NPD Group. His well-received 2008 survival-horror remake was pushed away from the top spot by Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.
Dead Space joins three other new games, Fire Emblem Engage (No.5), Forspoken (No.7), and One Piece Odyssey (No.9), among the top 20 bestsellers.
According to NPD’s Mat Piscatella, U.S. consumer spending on video game software, hardware and accessories fell 5% year-over-year, despite four new releases in the top 10. “While spending on video game hardware remained flat, spending on content (-5%) and accessories (-14%) declined,” he revealed on his Twitter account. This means that sales fell below the previous year for the first time since September last year.

However, not all went down. The Last of Us: Part 1, his PS5 remake of Naughty Dog’s famous survival horror, skyrocketed his position on the charts. Partly due to the popularity of his new HBO show, he rose from No. 36 to No. 11 on the sales charts.
As for Dead Space, a #2 debut means it’s off to a much better start than last year’s The Callisto Protocol. Widely seen as the spiritual successor to Dead Space, thanks to being helmed by original game co-creator Glenn Schofield, one might expect The Callisto Protocol to make some kind of splash. I can’t. However, despite that pedigree, he debuted at a commanding No. 17 on his NPD sales charts in December 2022.
In just one month, Callisto Protocol has completely disappeared from the top 20 best sellers. Only time will tell if Dead Space has the strength to crunch into next month’s charts, but with a much improved critical response in February and little AAA competition, the odds are more favorable.
