Diablo 4 Dev Confirms That if Hardcore Players Die in PvP, They’re Dead Forever

Hardcore Mode is an age-old Diablo tradition dating back to Diablo II, challenging players to the potential for permanent death. But what if your hardcore character happens to come across one of Diablo IV’s fields of hate?Well, watch your back.

When asked about the outcome of hardcore characters dying in PvP in Diablo IV, Blizzard Community Director Adam Fletcher simply replied, “Permadeath.”

So it’s time to roll a new character.

Diablo IV’s open world allows hardcore players to watch their steps, as they can freely enter the field of hatred. There, players can collect hate shards by killing other players and monsters. This area also contains a special vendor that acts as a further temptation to test your might in one of his PvP zones in Diablo IV.

For the daring, though, there’s the Fearless Combatant achievement, which can only be earned by getting 10 PvP kills in Hardcore mode. Otherwise, you can avoid Fields of Hatred entirely. This may be the more sensible route unless you get particularly powerful.

In the meantime, fans can try Diablo IV one more time before launch as part of an upcoming “server slam”. Designed to stress test Diablo IV’s servers before launch, the server slam includes a variety of changes from previous beta tests. Ends at 12:00 PM PST.

While you wait, check out our recent interview with the developer of Diablo IV. We’re talking class changes, dungeons, and more ahead of the final test.
