Diane Keaton Likes a Messy Comedy

One of Diane Keaton’s new favorite pastimes is going for walks alone and taking pictures of abandoned storefronts.

“You can see the sadness, but you can also see the attempts they made when they were selling what they were selling,” she said in a phone interview from her home in Los Angeles. It looks like one thing, and you can see that another place has clothes or some sort of fashion.

Acting shattered Keaton’s loneliness and gave her the opportunity to make friends and meet new people. So is her latest movie, Book Club: The Next Chapter.

Coming out Friday is the sequel to the 2018 film Book Club, reuniting Keaton and his friends, played by Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen. This time, they’re out of quarantine for a trip to Italy, and the film includes Paulo Coelho’s best-selling novel about a young shepherd in search of treasure and his “personal legend.” References to “alchemists” are scattered throughout.

“Movies are good,” said Keaton. “I did what I could, I mean.”

The 77-year-old Oscar-winning actress talked about Goodwill fashion, Miley Cyrus and tortillas. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

My interest in fashion goes back to my mother. Back when I was in junior high or less, when I was obsessed with what I wore, there were girls who had more money and wore clothes that I envy. My mother and I went to Noren and bought old clothes – old skirts, blouses – and she turned them into better versions.

My father loved the sea. He always collected us to explore all kinds of places with seaside. For almost a year he has been trying to buy me a beach house. It’s not going to be a grand beach house, but everyone still has a home.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a movie theater, but I loved going to the cinema, and it was so funny that it was a little disjointed, but now I’m slowly coming back. I like that. Glad to be back.

I have a huge wall of images cut out or saved from magazines. I’m looking at a photo clipped from a Buster Keaton magazine right now. This is really awesome. What a beautiful face! One is from a truck that has a giant sign that these men are trying to keep and that says “damaged” in big letters. Go to Figure.
