Elon Musk hires Twitter’s next CEO; former Meta COO a potential candidate

Elon Musk said May 10th Twitter has announced that it has elected a new CEO.

The next CEO will take over in the next few weeks

In a tweet, Musk wrote:

“We are thrilled to announce that X/Twitter has hired a new CEO. She is due to start in about 6 weeks!”

Musk said he will remain involved with the company as chairman and chief technology officer. He oversees product, software and system personnel.

Musk’s tweet indicated that the new CEO would be a woman, matching previous speculation that the front-runner was former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg. However, Musk and Twitter have yet to confirm the identity of the new CEO.

Musk acquired Twitter after months of negotiations and apparently canceled deals, and took over as CEO in October 2022.

Musk’s Twitter is less focused on cryptocurrencies

Musk’s acquisition of Twitter was expected to integrate cryptocurrency and blockchain capabilities into the social media platform, including Dogecoin payments.

However, cryptocurrency efforts appear to have scaled back under his leadership. Most recently, Twitter partnered with stock and cryptocurrency trading platform eToro in April. The site temporarily changed its logo to a Dogecoin icon in April.

Most of Twitter’s existing major crypto features, such as crypto tipping and NFT profile pictures, were introduced under Tess Linearson. Riniason will lead Twitter’s crypto division until November 2022, taking over during Jack Dorsey’s tenure as CEO in 2021.

Elon Musk’s continued involvement with Twitter means that a new CEO doesn’t necessarily change the company’s cryptocurrency direction.
