Ethereum failed to finalize transactions for 25 minutes but avoided full outage

Developers announced on May 11 that the Ethereum blockchain had been unable to complete transactions for just under 30 minutes.

The incident lasted about 25 minutes, and Ethereum contributor terence.eth said the issue is now resolved. he wrote:

“The mainnet is complete and we are currently investigating this incident. More to come!”

Ethereum Contributor Superphiz said Ethereum’s beacon chain has stopped finalizing, but the blockchain is “designed to be resilient” to such issues. The chain continued to partially process transactions during the incident.

The cause is still unknown, but Superphiz suggested that the problem may be due to a lack of client diversity. He said the loss of finality could have been avoided if there were no clients on the network with an advantage of more than 1/3 he. He added that the blockchain has avoided forks because it does not have a majority of clients.

Two consensus clients currently dominate Ethereum, Lighthouse and Prsym, each with 38% advantage. He is one of only three other clients with a noticeable presence.

Ethereum has experienced other obstacles in the past. In 2016 he had a DDOS attack and in November 2020 he had an Infura-related partial failure. In 2016, attacks against The DAO also had a major impact on Ethereum.
