Final Fantasy 7 Remake Gets Demake Mod to Bring Back Low-Poly Graphics

Fans may have waited 20 years for a Final Fantasy 7 remake, but a new PC mod brings the 2020s up-resed hero back to the low-poly graphics of the original PlayStation game.

As reported by PC gamerNexus Mods users fantasy raider created a mod that restores Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barrett, and Yuffie to their original spiky Final Fantasy 7 appearances.

Characters are shown in low-poly form, both in gameplay and in-engine cutscenes, technically taken from the Windows 1998 version of the game (evidenced by the mouth not appearing in the original). However, although it doesn’t appear in the remake’s full cinematic cutscene, it can be enjoyed in most of the game.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake – Demake Mod

Of course, everything else remains in full HD and only character models of playable characters are sent back in time. This includes Kusakabe Sonon, who wasn’t in the original game and was instead introduced in the remake’s Intermission chapter, but the mod also provides a low-poly model for him.

A similarly wacky mod is likely to be released for Rebirth, the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which Square Enix has finally confirmed as a late 2023 game. As a work, it may not be exactly what Final Fantasy 7 told us, but it will continue the remake’s story.
