After a haunting battle with the Stranger (later revealed to be Balder, the Norse God of Light), Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to fulfill Fae’s last wish. And so their journey begins.
Kratos and Atreus encounter (and often battle) the mythical creatures and gods of Norse mythology and explore their own interpersonal drama. Namely, Kratos’ shortcomings as a father and his hidden identity as a demigod that he chooses to hide. Moving on from the atrocities he committed over the course of previous God of War games.
It turns out that it’s Freya who’s helping Kratos and Atreus on their quest, a goddess herself and the mother of Balder, with whom she shares a complicated relationship (to say the least). Kratos intervenes in a family quarrel and kills Balder to save Freya against her will. As a result, she pledged to Kratos to “rain her every torment, every transgression imaginable”, setting her up as one of the two main antagonists of her Ragnarok.
Kratos reveals his past to Atreus, after which they climb the mountain and scatter Freyr’s ashes to complete the quest. Discovering that, Kratos gets a glimpse of the murals of things that may not yet come.
In one final reveal, we learn that Atreus is actually the trickster god Loki.
