God of War Ragnarok’s Story Almost Gave Kratos a Very Different Fate

In an early draft of God of War Ragnarok, Kratos was originally scheduled to die at the hands of Thor. According to Narrative Director Matt Sophos, Thor kills Kratos during the opening combat.

“It wasn’t a permanent death. He would essentially be plucked from Hel by Atreus. But 20 years have passed since then,” Sophos explains. minmax interviewHowever, this outline did not last long as the development team felt it was not suitable. Kratos has been resurrected from the dead many times in previous games.

God of War Ragnarok is one of the biggest games of 2022, winning multiple awards at last year’s The Game Awards and selling over 11 million copies to date. The game will also get a New Game Plus option this spring.
