Intel and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation announced that Intel co-founder Gordon Moore passed away peacefully this evening surrounded by his family in Hawaii.Moore co-founded Intel with his longtime friend Robert Noyce in 1968, but is best known as the originator of Moore’s Law. First written in 1965, Moore’s Law stated that the number of transistors on an integrated circuit would double every year. This law served as a goal to help move the semiconductor industry forward. In 1975, Moore modified this law to predict that the number of transistors would double his number every two years.

Moore and Noyce founded Intel in July 1968 after being part of the founding group of Fairchild Semiconductor. Moore initially served as Executive Vice President until 1975, then President until 1979 when he was appointed CEO and Chairman of the Board. Moore served as president until he was appointed honorary president in 1997. He held the position until his resignation in 2006.
Gordon Moore once said, “If you can do it, you can win it.” As his legal custodian, Intel works tirelessly to exponentially outperform him and what he and Robert Noyce are trying to do. He left a legacy that changed the lives of everyone on the planet. His memory will live on.March 25, 2023
In his later years, Gordon Moore was an active philanthropist, especially active in the fields of conservation, science, and improving patient care. Moore and his wife of 75 years founded the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and since its inception in 2000, he has donated more than $5.1 billion to charities.

Moore was awarded the National Medal of Engineering in 1990 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor, in 2002. Today, he is survived by his wife of 75 years, Betty Moore, sons Kenneth and Stephen, and his four grandchildren.
