Gotham Knights Isn’t an RPG Where You Start as a Weakling

Gotham Knights may be an action RPG, but it doesn’t follow the genre’s convention of starting characters as wimps. Instead, Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red in his Hood are all expected powerful Batman squires at the start of the game, finding their own ways to become stronger over the course of the game.

All four characters are more or less fully adept at what the development team informally calls “Batman stuff,” with their own skill trees that can blossom into different types of vigilantes as they progress. As part of IGN First’s monthly coverage of Gotham Knights, Creative Director Patrick Redding explained the thought process:

“For us, these heroes, our knights, were very important…they are already great at the start of the game. They are effectively graduates of the Batman School of Crime Fighting.

“So when they start, they’re the most similar in the sense that they have a lot of these basic tools of combat and stealth… And it’s really in the process. Gotham City’s Dark A game that completely branches into its own flavor of what a knight should be.

You can see how that manifests itself in the first 16 minutes of Gotham Knights footage. Batgirl moves and fights like Batman while investigating mysteries at the University of Gotham, easily defeating the freaks of Gotham and rogues from his gang.

“We didn’t want to make a dungeon crawler RPG where you send the player into a forest, kill six slugs, and come back with a staff,” explains game director Geoff Ellenor. “They’re ultimately very interesting people trained by Batman and others. They’re very smart. They’re very capable.・What is necessary to protect the city?” There is RPG progression, but it doesn’t start from zero at once. By the time you pick up the controller, it’s already rocking quite a bit. “

However, this doesn’t mean the game isn’t challenging, but it’s important to manage the balance between easily defeated opponents for these superheroes and bigger threats:

“I don’t want you to have a moment where a bad guy is going to torture you in an alleyway with a baseball bat,” continues Ellenor. “That said, there are some mini-bosses in the game that are pretty powerful, so you have to be a little careful at first.”
