How to Listen to DeSantis’s Presidential Announcement With Elon Musk on Twitter

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will announce his candidacy for president at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Twitter Spaces is a live audio streaming platform on Twitter where people gather online and talk in real time.

Times reporters provide analysis throughout the announcement so you can hear it on his Twitter account at 6 p.m.

Twitter launched Spaces in May 2021, making it one of the first social media platforms to create a dedicated audio streaming feature. The idea was simple: give people a way to talk and listen in a room focused on a specific topic.

Spaces was Twitter’s answer to Clubhouse, a livestream social app that grew rapidly amid the pandemic and demonstrated the power of an audio platform since its March 2020 release. Twitter once offered a video live-streaming service called Periscope, but due to the widespread availability of other video-streaming tools, the company decided to end his service in 2021 and focus on offering audio. Any Twitter user can join a space. Spaces have hosts who set up voice chat rooms and select topics to discuss. Hosts can manage their own space, choose who speaks, and solicit questions and comments from the audience. Some spaces have tens of thousands of listeners, but most spaces attract only a few dozen audiences.

Twitter has never released numbers on Spaces’ popularity. Elon Musk, who bought Twitter for $44 billion last year, is also a user and fan of the feature. He frequently appears on his Spaces to talk about various businesses and most recently he has given interviews with journalists, including two of his from the BBC and his CNBC.

Twitter is still working out the Spaces glitch. This feature has bugs and can kick users out or crash in some cases. In December, tens of thousands of users joined a voice chat room that shut down after hearing Mr. Musk discuss why Twitter banned several journalists from the social network.
