James Gunn on Ending Guardians of the Galaxy

Gamora was originally scheduled to die in “Vol.1”. 2” [2017]And we talked about how that happened in Infinity War, and it worked out better for the story. But the rest of them, I always knew where they were going. We knew that the whole trilogy was about Rocket, who we think of as a supporting character, becoming captain of the Guardians.

In a way, the story with Peter Quill can be seen as the story of many who have experienced childhood trauma. He was at his bedside when his mother died, but escaped and went into space – which for others might be cut off from the world – and remained there for a long time until he realized it as an adult. that he must return to Earth. For me it has always been his journey.

Nebula becomes a leader, but a different kind of leader than before. The praying mantis acts on its own and protects itself. Because all her life she lived according to other people’s rules. Drax realizes that he’s her father and that’s what he’s really good at. he is not a destroyer himself. All of these things have been in my mind since the first film, some more obviously than others.

Few Marvel series have been as influenced by Infinity War and Endgame as Guardians of the Galaxy. How did you feel about many of the key plot points happening outside of your own trilogy of films?

many? I believe there was only one.

Well, Gamora’s death is a big deal, but even her first kiss with Quill makes an appearance in ‘Infinity War’ after the first two ‘Guardians’ movies seem to be building towards it.

I begged them to do that kiss in the movie. Because it needed to really cement their relationship. We kissed in “Vol.” 2” was cut. It was great, but finished in odd timing. At the end of “Vol. I had to establish that this was normal for them. It wasn’t really about kissing, it was just to show that they were a couple now.
