Khadas VIM1S Low-Power SBC Gets Processor Refresh
Khadas is releasing an upgraded version of the VIM1 SBC Arm-powered SBC launched in 2016. CNX software (opens in new tab)is a low-power board that can still provide a Raspberry Pi 4 (opens in new tab) It’s a race in the low-power computing sector.
Comparison with other recently announced boards such as Radxa CM5 (opens in new tab) or even Khadas’ own VIM4 (opens in new tab), the VIM1S looks underpowered with an Amlogic S905Y4 quad-core Arm Cortex-A35 CPU running at up to 2.0 GHz and just 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM. However, it is highly dependent on the price at which it becomes available. The onboard GPU is a Mali-G31 MP2 unit, which can decode H.265, AV1, VP9, AVS2 up to 4Kp60, and he can decode H.264 up to 4Kp30. Additionally, it can decode 4 simultaneous streams at 1080p 60fps.
The full specs for the board haven’t been released yet, but we do know it features an Ethernet port (described as ‘high-speed’) and a pair of USB 2 ports, but uses USB 3 besides the Type-C port. Not. Power (there’s another 4-pin power connector if you prefer), but you can’t output video. It also has a 40-pin GPIO array that is said to be Raspberry Pi compatible, wireless connectivity for both Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0, and an external antenna that is a distinctive part of the board.
Also on the underside of the board is a 30-pin FPC connector with built-in eMMC flash and a Micro-SD card for storage. A full-size HDMI 2.1 port is visible in the published images. The board measures just 82mm x 58mm (3.2in x 2.2in), almost the same size as the Raspberry Pi 4.
This board is sold with low power requirements. “Our VIM1 single-board computer was a low-cost, power-efficient solution for many manufacturers and his OEM developers,” Khadas said. blog post (opens in new tab) Announce the board. “The much-loved Amlogic S905X SoC was power hungry and didn’t need a heatsink to function properly in many situations. The upgraded VIM1S integrates a new SoC with similar power requirements. but the processing and GPU performance are significantly improved.”
More information about the new board will be released soon.
