Kioxia’s BG6 M.2 2230 SSD is 1.7x Faster Than BG5, Doubles Capacity
Flash NAND maker Kioxia announced It is said that the BG6 series of client SSDs is being prepared. They are advertised to deliver a 1.7x performance improvement over the previous generation (BG5). Kioxia boasts that the BG6 series SSD maintains a compact M.2 2230 form factor while doubling its maximum capacity to 2 TB. Also available is his M.2 2280 single-sided form factor version of BG6.
The Kioxia BG6 M.2 2230 SSD uses a PCIe Gen4 x 4 interface and is claimed to deliver data transfer rates of up to 6.0 GB/s read and 5.3 GB/s write with I/O performance up to 900,000 IOPS. I’m here. The only hardware change reported by Kioxia, which could help with new faster performance, increased density and even improved power efficiency, is a move to the company’s 6th generation BiCS Flash 3D NAND chips. These newer drives do not use DRAM, but use Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology for caching.
To better understand the new generation Kioxia BG6 M.2 2230 drive, let’s compare the specs with the previous generation model and the recently announced Sabrent Rocket Q 2230 device.

As Sabrent recently said when it launched its Rocket Q device with the 2230 form factor, it’s good to have another competitor on the market. Availability of the highest capacity 2TB M.2 2230 devices has been sluggish, but in February, Framework reportedly began using its purchasing power to secure inventory of 2TB M.2 2230 SSDs for Steam Deck upgrades. Did. Framework has started procuring Western Digital SN740 2230 drives that offer up to 5.15 GB/s transfers and 800,000 IOPS depending on capacity.
Kioxia has yet to talk about pricing for the BG6 M.2 2230 SSD, but says it will begin sampling with OEMs in the second half of this year. If you’re looking for a new HIS SSD right now, check out our list of the best HIS SSDs.
