Lord of the Rings: Weta Workshop and Private Division to Release New Game Set Outside the Films

A new Lord of the Rings game is in the works from Weta Workshop and Private Division, set as part of the literary world rather than the cinematic one.

announced today Via Twitterthe next game takes place in Middle-earth, with Weta, who worked on Peter Jackson’s original film and Amazon’s The Rings of Power, teaming up with Take-Two’s Private Division publishing label.

“We are pleased to announce that we have partnered with Weta Workshop to publish a new game set in JRR Tolkien’s literary Middle-earth universe,” Private Division revealed. “I look forward to sharing more about this project in the future.”

The untitled game, said to be in early development, is set to launch in 2024. However, according to the announcement, the game will very specifically: literature Middle-earth universe. That is, it sits outside of recent movies and TV shows and ties directly to Tolkien’s original books.

The game is produced by Weta, who founded their own game development studio in 2014.

Weta Workshop’s Head of Interactive Division, Amie Wolken, said: “As fans, we’re excited to help gamers explore Middle-earth like never before and introduce new fans to the magic of The Lord of the Rings.”

Head of Private Division Michael Worosz said: “His IP for Lord of the Rings has so many remarkable stories to tell, and to create a unique and new Middle-earth gaming experience, he’s equipped as well as the team at Weta Workshop. No entity provided.”

Of course, this isn’t the only Lord of the Rings game on the card, Lord of the Rings: Gollum is due out next year.
