This connection allows Pico microcontrollers to support 10BASE-T communication. The name comes from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and refers to the ability to transmit 10Mbps Ethernet signals over twisted pair cable.
At the time of writing, this adapter is not suitable for PoE (Power over Ethernet) equipment and has limited capabilities it can handle. According to Twi_Kingyo, it can only be sent over UDP. There are plans to implement a receive process, but for now Pico can only send data over a connection.
If you were to recreate this project or develop something similar, you wouldn’t need a lot of hardware, but you would need some specific components to pull the connections out. You will also need two 47 ohm resistors and one 470 ohm resistor. These are connected to GPIO pins 16 and 17.
Twi_Kingyo recommends adding a pulse transformer for added safety. This was accomplished in the project demo by wrapping a twisted pair cable around a ferrite core.
