Meteor Lake 16-Core Mobile CPU Surfaces On eBay For $999
While Intel was busy demonstrating its 14th Gen Meteor Lake processors at Computex 2023, other companies had already shown the same hybrid chips on eBay. “Brand New” Meteor Lake Mobile Processors (via) Harukaze 5719) has been put up for sale on eBay $999there are two sellers available.
Since the Meteor Lake in question is a mobile version, it’s of no use to anyone unless they have a compatible platform to house it. Meteor Lake will come to laptops first. This explains how the distributor was able to get their hands on an early Meteor Lake chip and put it up for sale. Intel has yet to confirm if there are plans for desktops. According to a leaked Intel roadmap, Meteor Lake will reportedly debut as lower-power Core i3 and Core i5 parts. A subsequent rumor is that Intel has canceled his 6P+8E configuration for desktop Meteor Lake.
According to eBay’s description, the processor appears to be the Meteor Lake P 6C+8A+GT2 model. P-series SKUs are specifically designed for thin and light laptops, so they typically have lower TDPs and lower clock speeds. Previous Raptor Lake-P and Alder Lake-P processors adhered to the 28W TDP limit, so Meteor Lake-P is likely to follow the same guidelines.
The Meteor Lake-P chip appears to feature 6 P cores and 8 E cores. Note, however, that there are two low-power E-cores inside the SoC tile. Meteor Lake-P processors therefore feature a 16-core, 22-thread design, the same chip that Intel used in its Computex 2023 demo. Disregarding the SoC cores, the Meteor Lake-P would share the same configuration as the flagship Core i7-1370P Raptor Lake-P powering thin laptops such as the Framework Laptop 13.
Meteor Lake-P utilizes the Redwood Cove and Crestmont cores, which are expected to provide significant uplift to the Raptor Cove and Gracemont cores within Raptor Lake-P. The Meteor Lake-P will also come with enhanced integrated graphics. The leaked Meteor Lake benchmarks have revealed that the processors with Xe units with up to 128 EUs or 1,204 ALUs will run at 2.1 GHz. For comparison, the Raptor Lake-P and Alder Lake-P Xe iGPUs have a maximum of 96 EUs. With the added EUs and higher clock speeds, Meteor Lake-P could potentially deliver graphics performance similar to Nvidia’s or AMD’s entry-level discrete options.
One of Meteor Lake’s selling points is the VPU (Versatile Processing Unit) unit that resides within the SoC tile and is responsible for AI workloads. VPUs based on 3rd Gen Movidius technology are available for all Meteor Lake chips. Unfortunately, Intel showed off the capabilities of his VPU but didn’t provide any benchmark figures.
Intel will be rebranding its Meteor Lake processors and will provide some insight on the new ‘Core’ rework later on. More information on Meteor Lake will be announced in the third quarter of this year. However, the processor won’t hit the retail market until the summer. Intel’s Meteor Lake plans are ambitious, with the chipmaker aiming to ship millions of Meteor Lake chips to consumers over the next year.
