Nextorage Is Launching a Funky 10GB/s Gen 5 SSD That’s Not for the PS5
Nextorage (a company closely associated with Sony) is releasing a new PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSD. NE5N, with blazing fast read and write speeds rated at 10,000 MB/s, aimed at the enthusiast PC market. This drive is available for pre-order on Newegg. $249.99 (opens in new tab) 1 TB, double the price and capacity $499.99 (opens in new tab) It is for 2 TB and will be officially available on June 5th.
A prototype of this drive was first seen at the Tokyo Game Show when Nextorage first indicated its intention to enter the PCIe Gen 5 market. The company has undergone many transformations since its inception. Initially thought to be the only PlayStation 5 SSD supplier due to its roots in Sony but then with SSD designs designed for both console and PC competing with his SSD being the best on the market , transformed into his respected SSD manufacturer.
The 2 TB model has a maximum sequential write and read speed of 10,000 MB/s, a maximum random access speed of 1.4 million IOPS, and a write endurance of 1,400 TB. It also features 4GB DDR4 SDRAM with a maximum power rating of 11W.
As is often the case with SSDs, the smaller 1TB model is slightly slower, with read speeds of 9500MB/s and write speeds of 8,500MB/s. Random access speeds remain similar, except read speeds drop to 1.3 million IOPS. The drive also features his 2GB of DDR4 SDRAM instead of 4GB, half the endurance at 700TB.
Unfortunately, there is no 4TB version at the moment, but a 4TB prototype was on display at the Tokyo Game Show, so I’m assuming it will appear in the future.
To keep the drive cool, it has an exotic dual heatsink design that balances the temperature difference between the NAND flash and SSD controllers. It also features a patent-pending “double-decker + heatpipe” design, which is said to evenly distribute heat on the heatsink itself, further improving SSD cooling. The drawback of this heatsink design is that it is very tall. This prevents functionality on consoles and laptops, as well as some compact PCs. However, future versions of the NE5N will drop the heatsink in order to make it more compatible with compact systems and laptops that utilize third-party coolers.
Technically you should be able to use these drives with the PlayStation 5 with a 3rd party heatsink, but you’ll be limited to PCIe Gen 4 speeds, so no more speeds than you can use if you have enough speed. It makes no sense to invest. One of the best PS5 Gen 4 drives on the market today with the lowest cost.
Again, both drives are available in just over a month, starting at $249.99 for the 1 TB model and $499.99 for the 2 TB version.
