Nvidia Kills Off GameStream Feature On Shield Devices
Nvidia has emailed Shield owners that the chip maker has decided to deprecate the GameStream feature. The company plans to push updates for Shield devices starting in mid-February, when GameStream will no longer be available. The news doesn’t bode well for consumers who recently purchased Shield devices during the Black Friday sale.
If you’re unfamiliar with Nvidia’s GameStream feature, this is a feature that allows your Shield TV or Shield tablet to stream your favorite titles from your GeForce GTX-powered computer. The chipmaker previously updated his GameStream to support frame rates up to 60 FPS at 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution.
Nvidia did not share the reason for unplugging GameStream. However, the chipmaker encouraged Shield users to try his GeForce Now. GeForce Now is his cloud streaming service from Nvidia, and it’s free if you’re willing to accept significant limits. The Priority package is $9.99/month, while the RTX 3080 tier is $19.99. Nvidia also recommended Valve’s Steam Link as an alternative to GameStream. Of course, there is also AMD Link that supports non-AMD devices.
Nvidia is disabling GameStream in the form of an update to the Nvidia Games app. Shield owners can ignore the update and GameStream may work for a while beyond the grace period. However, it eventually stopped working, and other services such as GeForce Now require apps to be updated to continue working. It looks like another team of developers worked with his Moonlight team to create Sunshine. Sunshine masquerading as his GameStream host, which is open source, could be a viable option if GameStream is gone.
