One D&D: Dungeons & Dragons Dropping ‘Editions’, Developing VTT Tools

Following Spelljammer’s 5e reboot, the Wizards of the Coast team has unveiled One D&D, marking the beginning of “a new generation of Dungeons & Dragons.”

WotC has been working on “what’s next” for D&D since last year, but so far the details have been sparse. The creative team appeared in a short video at the recent Wizards Presents digital showcase (along with details about the upcoming Dragonlance return and some of his MTG crossover events) to explain their future plans for D&D.

Throughout the presentation, the team elaborated on the “three pillars” of the next phase of D&D, which is scheduled to begin in earnest in 2024. This includes ongoing updates to D&D rules, as seen in recent sourcebooks such as Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. -Wizards recently purchased an expanded version of D&D Beyond, a popular digital compendium, and (eventually) a set of his digital tabletop tools for the player and his GM to use in-game at home or online .

“We are no longer in a position to see D&D as an ‘edition’. It’s just D&D.”

Called D&D Digital, the digital toolset is designed in Unreal Engine 5 and appears to be an all-in-one hybrid of virtual tabletops like Roll20 and TaleSpire and custom mini makers like HeroForge and Eldritch Foundry. “Nowadays, players are combining all sorts of different apps and websites for a truly integrated his D&D experience,” said Cale, principal game designer at D&D Digital, his statsman. says. “What we want to do is give the player all the tools he needs to play for himself in one space.”

D&D Digital Pre-Alpha Screenshots

Pre-alpha footage released during the broadcast showed digitally rendered tabletop minis of various types and sizes, from heroes battling kobolds and skeletons to giant black dragons looming over dungeons. These may not be from the specific campaigns or dungeons currently in D&D adventures, but that’s one of the goals of the project. However, the team is also working to empower players to build their own worlds.

Carlo Arellano, Principal Art Director at D&D Digital, said: “But you will be able to take this place, dismantle it, and build your own dungeon. I plan to have it ready.”

Despite the early builds of the toolset, we still have a long way to go before release. “Right now we are in the early stages of developing a digital experience,” he said Stutzman. “You can roll the dice to play a role in the game and watch the miniatures move around in a 3D play space, but that’s just the heart of the game.”

The biggest change (and one that players can get sooner) is how the tabletop D&D team approaches the evolution of the game itself. Chris Perkins, Game Design Architect at D&D, said: “And the result of that process was a stable, well-loved system that incorporated the best elements of previous editions. Now that we’ve done that, we’re in a position to think of D&D as an edition. There is no – it’s just D&D.”

The next iteration of Core Rules is already in the playtest stage. You can check out. D&D Beyond’s Newest Unearthed Arcana First round of updates and additions. This first release introduces a new player race, the celestial version of tieflings known as ardlings, and even considering recent changes to the TCoE or Monsters of the Multiverse system, it already has some notable features. A rule change is being made. For example, characters now receive additional ability score points based on their parentage or race, but those increases are now tied to backgrounds in the updated ruleset, so that all backgrounds also offer feats. became. For example, a soldier receives +2 STR and +1 CON along with the Savage Attacker feat, while a character with the Street Urchin background receives bonuses to his Dexterity/Wisdom and Lucky feats.

“How can we have more fun, faster, and more options?”

“The background is what we took apart, examined all the pieces, and reconstructed with the goal of recreating [them] Another game design architect at D&D, Jeremy Crawford, said in an in-depth presentation of the new playtest rules: Other major deviations from the current 5e rules include having certain feats tied to a character’s level and being truncated. His current list of nine spells for each class codifies the concept that he falls into three or rolls a Natural 1 based on his magical source (Arcane, Divine, and Primal). everytime Means failure – in check, no matter how skilled the character is.
