Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Newest Monster Is a Ghost Puppy

The latest Pokémon to appear in Scarlet and Violet is called Gleebird, a ghostly puppy that may or may not steal your soul.

In The Pokémon Company’s new cinematic trailer (below), a Trainer from the Pardea region’s Naranja Academy goes on a quest to discover new pocket monsters. The Trainer, who passed the nostalgic Mimikyu and Gengar, finally meets the Greebird.

With a spooky purple candle atop its head, the puppy Pokémon seems to enjoy hiding underground, but is just as happy playing with its trainer. She rolls over, chases sticks, and does whatever a normal dog does, but the more she plays, the more slowly she seems to steal the soul of her trainer.

Trainor eventually loses consciousness, presumably as a result of playing with Greebird, when he comments in the trailer that she’s in worse shape than she thought she should be. But it could all be part of an evil plot to steal human souls.

Dark Turn doesn’t seem like something The Pokemon Company would include, but most of the cute, cuddly pocket monsters often have very sinister backstories. For example, Driflon, the cute purple balloon Pokemon, has the following entry in the Pokédex:

Gleebird is the latest on the list of new Pokémon coming to Scarlet and Violet, the 9th generation game, which releases for Nintendo Switch on November 18th. They bring the series’ first co-op mode, an open world set in the Pardea region. A legendary Pokémon that transforms into a motorcycle.
