PS5 Black Friday Upgrade: 2TB Samsung 980 Pro SSD for $189

Sony’s PS5 console has a powerful GPU and plenty of games, but it’s got a modest 825 GB SSD inside. Popular games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Marvel’s Avengers can use nearly or more than 200 GB of disk space all by themselves. If you can only fit a handful of games on the PS5’s main SSD, it’s very limited.
Luckily, Sony has an easy solution. Add a second M.2 SSD to hold more games. However, the PS5 has some very specific requirements, as it needs a PCIe 4.0 drive with sequential read speeds of 5,500 MBps or higher, a heatsink, and cannot exceed 11.25 mm overall.
Aftermarket heatsinks can be added to any SSD, but it’s easier to get a drive with a heatsink. Samsung’s 980 Pro SSD is not only fast enough to meet the PS5 SSD’s speed requirements, but it also comes with an appropriately sized heatsink. And now you can get 2TB capacity Only $189 At Amazon (opens in new tab)which is a spectacularly low price.
While not as fast as the yet to be released Samsung 990 Pro, the 980 Pro is fast enough for our gaming needs. Our lab tested the Samsung 980 Pro with the PS5 and it read at 5,668.6 MBps. The games also load very quickly, with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla booting in 51 seconds for him, Mass Effect: Andromeda in 26 seconds for him, and Elden Ring in just 22 seconds.
