Radeon RX 5600 XT Gets Modified With 12GB of VRAM

YouTuber and graphics card modder Paulo Gomes has upgraded one more This time I am using AMD Power Color Radeon RX 5600 XT Red Dragon. The card has changed from 6GB memory to 12GB capacity using a faster 2GB 16Gbps memory chip.

The memory mod for this card was simpler compared to a recent RTX 3060 8GB to 12GB mod from the same modder. The mod itself involved replacing the original 6 memory modules with 6 new modules with double the capacity, and editing the AMD card’s BIOS to support the new modules.

To replace the memory module, Gomes used a heat gun to warm the connection points between the memory IC and the PCB, so he could safely remove the memory module without damaging the component. He then prepared his PCB for his new 2GB module with a special glue that held the module in place and attached the new module to the card.

The RX 5600 XT does not ship with a 12GB configuration, so a BIOS mod is required for support. The modder used his hex editor to manipulate the appropriate values so that the BIOS recognized the faster 2GB IC and flashed the BIOS to the card. Some AMD GPUs are capable of modding his BIOS, but not the latest of his Nvidia GPUs.

The 5600 XT with the new module showed significant performance improvements, at least in certain tests. For example, his Unigine Superposition test used by Gomes included a benchmark run at 10K resolution to fully saturate a 12GB memory configuration. His original 8GB configuration scored 191 points in this benchmark configuration, while the modified card scored 412 points in the same configuration. Of course, most games won’t see this same performance boost, but for games that use more than 6GB of video memory, the extra VRAM of him can still be useful.

The meaning of this mod is more suitable for AMD GPUs, as you can change the BIOS in the way Gomes showed. In theory, this could upgrade any AMD Radeon graphics card with more video memory. This is because, as far as we know, AMD BIOS has no edit limit. This is a far cry from his latest Nvidia GPU which does not allow any kind of BIOS mods on his.

Of course, the tools and skills required to do this kind of mod are another matter. Most users will appreciate it, but if they want a 12GB or 24GB card, they’d rather spend their money on one of the best graphics cards than upgrade his 3-year-old RX 5600 XT. is much easier. .
