Premium backup subscription services from big names like Apple and Google can cost as much as $100 a year. Instead of relying on third-party systems to manage data, ThinkLearnDo Encrypted backup system From scratch using our favorite board, raspberry pi.
This system not only automates data backups, but also acts as a key holder. This works for ThinkLearnDo, who has a 512 GB USB drive ready to back up his data overnight. Just lock it up at night, plug in your USB drive, and by morning your backup will be ready.
There are many ways to set up a backup system, but ThinkLearnDo chose to integrate another Linux server. This server backs up files from multiple computers connected to it and notifies the Pi of files that have changed to facilitate updating the backup. The system is programmed to stop the backup process by early morning, so it’s safe to remove the drive when it’s time to drive.
ThinkLearnDo uses a Raspberry Pi 3 B+, but there’s no reason why you can’t use a more recent model like the Raspberry Pi 4. In addition to your Pi, you will need an EXT4 formatted USB drive to receive your backups. A 3D printed case that holds it all together.
