Raspberry Pi Brings ‘Stray’ Droid to Life
of raspberry pi You can find it on quite a few prop heads.one of our favorites is this terminator business. Today we’re introducing another exciting robotic replica noggin made by the makers known as Illicitpugs on Reddit. With the help of our favorite his SBC and a 3D printer they managed to create droid head replica From the 2022 game Stray.
According to Illicitpugs, they found Stray’s droid to resemble a traditional Macintosh PC. After pondering the design, Illicitpugs decided to create one of these stray he droids from scratch.
The end result is a beautiful replica with a working LCD face and a stand to keep your head upright. There are knobs in the corners of the face that can be used to rotate different facial expressions. This is what the Illicitpugs have confirmed they got from the game. The knob also functions as a button that changes color scheme when pressed.
The head shell was designed and 3D printed by Illicitpugs using Fusion 360. The size was determined by the LCD panel and was built around it to get the right proportions based on how the droid would look in-game. Inside is a Raspberry Pi 3A+ alongside an Adafruit i2c rotary encoder board and a Pimoroni HyperPixel Square LCD screen.
The interface was built from scratch using nodeJS as a full screen application as well. It will start as soon as you turn on the Pi via Chrome using kiosk mode. The face sprite is animated to give it a more lifelike look than a static image.
Your role in Stray is to unravel the mysteries of a long-lost world. A world where robots created by organic life exist long after their creators die. The game combines futuristic technology with his 1980s influences, so it resembles the classic Apple Mac robot. Oh, and the game is played from the point of view of a cat straying from the group.
