Razer Upgrades Blade 14 Gaming Laptops to USB 4 via a Software Update
Razer has announced a new update to its latest 2022 Razer Blade 14 notebook that upgrades the system to USB4 connectivity without the need for new hardware. The update comes in the unexpected form of a software update that upgrades the Blade 14’s dual Type-C USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports to USB 4.
Upgrading laptop USB ports with software updates is not something you see every day. Unfortunately, Razer hasn’t shared details on how to upgrade the 2022 Blade 14 to USB 4 through software alone. Issued an upgrade.
According to recent information Framework blog post, Framework laptops have supported USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4 for years, even though there was no official support until last week. This was because the hardware was already in place to support both USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4, including retimers, USB power delivery controllers, power circuits, and connectors. However, it took the Framework two years to address all bugs related to both connectivity standards. Last week, the company finally announced a fully certified Thunderbolt 4-specific firmware update, but it looks like the USB 4 update is still pending.
Nonetheless, we suspect Razer had a similar roadmap for the 2022 Razer Blade 14 notebook. These laptops were built with USB 4 in mind at the very beginning of the design process. I’m ready.
