Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2023: Kate Bush, Missy Elliott, Willie Nelson

Reclusive (but newly relevant) experimental pop singer Kate Bush, one-of-a-kind rapper Missy Elliott, and 90-year-old country stalwart Willie Nelson crossed genres into this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I’m one of the people. The museum and the organization behind the annual ceremony announced the lineup on Wednesday, highlighting how the new class reflects “the diverse artists and sounds that define rock and roll.”

Rounding out the seven acts, voted on by more than 1,000 artists, historians and music industry experts, is pop singer George Michael, who passed away in 2016. The Spinners, a 1970s soul group previously nominated three times. Sheryl Crow, a pop rock singer who recorded platinum sales in the 1990s. And politically rambunctious rap-rock band Rage Against the Machine crossed the threshold with their fifth vote.

The Rock Hall ceremony will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Friday, November 3rd.

It didn’t fit the narrow limits well. But as the genre and organization continue to evolve, those behind the scenes have proven more and more welcoming to honor country artists like rapper, pop singer and Dolly Parton.

In a statement accompanying Wednesday’s induction announcement, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation president John Sykes said: Willie Nelson’s 90th anniversary, hip-hop’s 50th anniversary.

Nelson — who celebrated his birthday The weekend featured concerts by Neil Young, Miranda Lambert, and Snoop Dogg — Rockhall’s first record since 1987, 25 years after the release of his first commercial recording, and six years before being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Qualified… Like Michael, “Faith” and “Freedom! ’90”, this was Nelson’s first vote.

Bush, who hasn’t released an album in over a decade, has been nominated three times in the past. Deal With God) reached a new peak of #3 on pop radio and the Billboard Hot 100.

Voters did not vote for traditional rock bands such as Soundgarden, White Stripes, Iron Maiden and Joy Division, nor for singer-songwriters Warren Zevon and Cyndi Lauper in the latest poll. Rap group A Tribe Called Quest also failed to make the cut.

But aside from being inducted into the Hall of Fame as performers, this fall’s ceremony will also celebrate hip-hop pioneer DJ Kool Herc and guitarist Link Wray (accepted for ‘Musical Influence’). Singer Chaka Khan, composer and producer Al Kooper, and songwriter Bernie Taupin (for “musical excellence”). and “Soul Train” creator, producer and host Don Cornelius (winner of the Executive Ahmet Ertegun Award).
