SanDisk Pro-G40 SSD Review: Rugged Thunderbolt on the Go
SanDisk Pro-G40 is a resilient, fast portable SSD with a USB-C interface that supports both Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 transfer modes. This gives you some flexibility as it works on a large number of devices with higher maximum speeds. The metal core is surrounded by a silicone bumper edge that cools his M.2 SSD inside while protecting the drive from drops and other mishaps. The USB-C port is reinforced with metal for added protection, and SanDisk specs a full SSD with an IP68 waterproof rating. This drive comes with a Type-C to Type-C cable, a good warranty and great support.
This drive is professionally priced and its combination of lasting performance and toughness is our last recommendation. samsung t7 shieldThe Pro-G40’s SSD technology is a bit dated, but it does have DRAM and Thunderbolt mode advantages over the T7 Shield. PCIe 3.0 drives from Western Digital, Red SN700, known for its excellent sustained write performance and overall consistency. This also applies to the Pro-G40, making it unmatched when data needs to be transferred quickly in the field.

The SanDisk Pro-G40 is rated at up to 2,700/1,900 MBps in sequential read and write respectively in Thunderbolt 3 mode. It has another rating of up to 1,050/1,000 MBps in USB mode. The former uses a 40 Gbps connection, the latter 10 Gbps. This works for both available capacities.
The unit is fairly portable, weighing around 120 grams with a footprint of 4.36 x 2.28 x 0.47 inches. It’s also dust and water resistant as it’s designed to be a bit rugged with an IP68 rating. SanDisk also says he can survive a 3-meter drop with up to 4000 pounds of impact resistance. The company backs this up with a five-year warranty.
Software and accessories
The SanDisk Pro-G40 comes with a relatively short 20cm (about 8 inches) USB Type-C to Type-C cable. Western Digital offers various downloads for the drive, and SanDisk also offers his own SSD Dashboard software. This should cover your basic needs.
look carefully
The SanDisk Pro-G40 is a nice looking drive. The aluminum core is sturdy and also helps with heat dissipation. The USB-C port is reinforced with metal for added durability. The drive is also protected against drops with rubberized edges. The design is simple but effective.
We do not recommend opening the casing as it requires some finesse. The case has ample thermal pads to ensure efficient heat transfer. Inside is his PCB with an SSD, a Thunderbolt controller, a bridge chip, and a USB-C port.
The drive is a standard M.2 2280 form factor with a controller, two NAND packages, and DRAM. The Thunderbolt 3 controller is a Titan Ridge JHL7440 and the USB bridge chip is a 10 Gbps ASMedia ASM2362. This bridge is commonly used in commercially available portable SSDs. Since the drive has DRAM, you don’t have to worry about the slow host memory buffer technology found in slower devices, but this is passed over Thunderbolt 3 (TB3).

However, shutting down this drive doesn’t make much sense.
1GB of SK hynix DDR4 is matched with 1TB of 96-layer BiCS4 TLC, the latter being placed in two 512GB packages. This makes this drive more like a red SN700 or a black SN730. Black SN750.
