Sega is Reportedly Close to Acquiring Angry Birds Developer Rovio for $1 Billion

Sega is reportedly looking to acquire Angry Birds developer Rovio Entertainment for around $1 billion.

according to wall street journalthe deal between Sega and Rovio Entertainment is set to end early next week unless talks between the two companies fall apart or drag on.

Neither Sega nor Rovio have made an official announcement yet. Rovio was previously in talks to be acquired by Israeli mobile operator Playtika for his $800 million deal, but the deal ended last month. Sega has acquired several companies over the last few years, including Company of Heroes developer Relic Entertainment, Two Point Campus developer Two Point Studios, and most famously Persona developer his Atlus.

There have been many acquisitions in the video game industry lately. This includes the merger agreement between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard and the merger of Sony and Bungie. In particular, the mobile gaming sector is growing as well. Activision Blizzard’s Candy Crush franchise has been a big boon to Microsoft’s portfolio, and Sony last year created a mobile division to create games based on new and existing IP. Additionally, Take-Two Interactive acquired his mobile developer Zynga last year.

Angry Birds was first released in 2009 and is one of the most popular mobile games of all time. Rovio Classics: Angry Birds was released in March 2022. It contains the original Angry Birds game with all chapters and all Easter eggs and extras from the time.
