Several Forza Horizon Developers Leave Playground Games and Xbox to Form New Studio

Several developers from Playground Games, the Forza Horizon developers on Xbox, have left the company to found a new studio, Maverick Games.

As reported by euro gamer, former Forza Horizon 5 creative director Mike Brown will head up the new studio, joining five other former Playground employees. The development team is working on a “premium open world game for consoles and PC” and has already secured “significant seed funding.”

Other developers joining Maverick Games include Playground lead producer Tom Butcher, technical director Matt Craven, technical art director Gareth Harwood, audio director Fraser Stachan, and art director Ben Penrose.

“For players, we’re already working on exciting, ultra-high quality titles, and for developers, everyone can take risks, be curious, be creative, be innovative, be themselves, and most of all, be yourself. Be Maverick,” said the developer.

Playground Games was founded in 2010 and until recently only developed Forza Horizon games. But 2020 made the switch to something new, when Xbox announced he was working on Fable, the latest game in its fantasy RPG franchise.

“You just see what Playground has done with the Horizon series: their attention to detail, their ability to render these naturalistic landscapes,” said Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios at the time. says.

“They also have a real passion for IP and a unique perspective on what Fable is all about. You know it’s going to be a release.”
