Should You Play the Breath of the Wild DLC Before Tears of the Kingdom?

With one week to go until The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releases, there’s never been a better time to finish playing Breath of the Wild. For some people, that might mean finishing the main story and collecting everything, but Breath of the Wild is much more than the base game.

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild DLC is an expansion pass that offers multiple DLC packs. Each pack contains special armor and items, plus additional DLC side quests to continue your journey as Link. If you’re wondering if you should get the Expansion Pass before diving into Tears of the Kingdom, here’s a quick rundown of what’s included.

Master Trial – DLC Pack 1

The first DLC in the Breath of the Wild expansion pass offers a number of benefits. The Master Trials DLC adds two more modes for him: Master Mode and Heroes Pass Mode. Master mode allows you to face more layers of enemies and make the battle even more difficult. Meanwhile, Hero’s Pass mode lets you see where you’ve been, so you can pinpoint any Korok seeds or temples you may have missed.

Aside from the additional modes, the main attraction of this DLC is Trials of the Sword. This is a challenge mode where you have to survive a gauntlet of levels filled with multiple enemies. With a total of 51 levels, it’s the game’s most challenging trial, but it’s worth it to finish powering up to the Master Sword.

This DLC pack also includes 8 new clothing items (such as Majora’s Mask), a travel medallion that allows you to move to locations outside the shrine, and a Korok Mask that sways when near Korok Seeds.

Ballad of Champions – DLC Pack 2

The second DLC pack focuses on storyline expansion rather than additional modes. Champions Ballad DLC has a new questline that can only be started after completing the main his quest to free the Divine Beast. After a mysterious voice inviting Link to take on the Trials of the Divine Beast Tamer, he must prove himself by defeating enemies, solving new shrine quests, and even challenging an entirely new dungeon. No. Furthermore, Kas the Bard continues his quest to complete the unfinished song.

Aside from the new quests, this DLC pack also contains 9 additional clothing items hidden in Hyrule chests. It also comes with ancient horse gear that allows you to increase the number of spurs you equip, allowing you to summon your horse no matter how far away it is.
