Sony Patent For NFT and Blockchain Technology Uncovered

Sony has published a patent suggesting the company is exploring blockchain and NFT technology for tracking in-game assets in video games.

I’m here. According to the patent, digital assets range from gameplay moments to in-game items and characters.

Sony’s patent describes technology that can track the history of in-game items as they pass from player to player, which is one of the core ideas behind NFTs. In the patent, Sony states that “there is no way to distinguish certain instances of in-game items used by famous video game players to win famous tournaments from other instances of in-game items.” I’m here.

The patent description also states that people find it “meaningful” to own or use a unique item associated with a respected celebrity or activity.

It’s worth pointing out that PlayStation filed this patent in July 2021. That was before the big controversy over NFTs came to the forefront.

PlayStation previously stepped into the world of NFTs with EVO 2022. In a player survey, PlayStation asked fans what kind of NFT of his they would like to purchase. Possible answers listed included Evo, music artists, esports, PlayStation items, and NFTs based on favorite game characters.

Sony’s new PlayStation Stars rewards program will feature a digital collectible format, though the company says the rewards are “not NFTs.”

NFT speculation is a big part of the video game news cycle in 2022, not just for PlayStation, with GameStop introducing crypto/NFT wallets and EA continuing to evaluate the technology. Multiple studios have spoken out against his NFTs, with many developers signing anti-NFT pledges and Minecraft avoiding implementing his NFTs or blockchain technology.
