Sony Testing Discord Voice Chat on PlayStation 5 With Beta Users

The new PS5 system software beta adds a number of upgrades, including support for Discord voice chat and variable refresh rates for 1440p displays.

Presented in playstation blog, the new system software is available to beta participants in the United States, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany and France. Its main feature is the addition of Discord voice chat, which allows cross-platform calling via the popular Discord system. Users must link their Discord and PlayStation Network accounts in order to use the Service. After that, you’ll need to initiate the call in the Discord mobile app before transferring it to your console. It looks a little more work than your standard PSN party, but it’s sure to be very welcome for those who often play with friends on Xbox or PC.

Another big feature of the beta update is variable refresh rate support for 1440p resolution displays. This allows for smoother visual performance when using VR-compatible HDMI 2.1 displays if your game supports variable refresh rates. VRR can be enabled from the screen and video settings.

The new beta also offers a variety of smaller upgrades focused on user experience. These include the ability to share your screen directly from a friend’s profile card. A “Playing Friends” tile that shows who in your friends list is playing the game you’re looking at. New manual upload feature to send certain gameplay captures of her to his PS app. PS VR and PS VR2 filters for your game library. Data transfer function from new PS5 to his PS5 (available via Wi-Fi or LAN). PS4 game notification popup alerts you to PS4 save game data in the cloud.

There is also a limited US and UK release for voice commands for video capture. This allows users to say “Hey PlayStation, capture that” and save a video clip of their gameplay. The Xbox Kinect days have started again.
