Sony’s ‘Project Q’ Handheld Streams Games From Your PS5
Sony will use PS Remote Play to enable gamers to stream games from PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles to Android, iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and Windows devices. You can even stream it to another his PS5 or PS4 if you prefer. But now, Sony is giving remote play a new twist with the introduction of the Project Q handheld.
To the untrained eye, Project Q looks like a DualShock 5 controller split in half and connected to an 8-inch display. The controller has adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, and the 8-inch display features 1080p resolution and is capped at 60 fps.
Sony says you’ll only be connecting to Remote Play over Wi-Fi. There doesn’t seem to be a provision for integrated cellular connectivity. However, using your smartphone as a mobile hotspot to connect to the internet on the go is not difficult.
Before you get the idea that Project Q could be a true Valve Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, or even Nintendo Switch competitor, know it’s just a streaming device. Handhelds don’t have games installed directly on them, nor do they have hardware powerful enough to allow native playback. So, if you want a full-fledged self-contained handheld, you should stick with the devices above.
Unfortunately, Sony has not revealed any details about Project Q. We don’t know how much the Project Q will weigh or how long its internal battery will last. Additionally, no pricing information has been revealed, although we do know that Sony plans to launch it later this year.
What remains to be seen is whether this will become a popular device with customers. As we mentioned at the beginning, Sony offers a wide range of options for customers to stream games from her PS5 or PS4. For example, the recently announced Backbone One PlayStation Edition allows you to have a similar remote play experience on your Android smartphone. But don’t miss the larger 8-inch display, haptic feedback, and adaptive triggers.
Your biggest pain point with your customers will probably come down to pricing. The PlayStation 5 starts at $399, so Project Q will have to bring that price down significantly to make it stand out in the console gaming community.
