Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi Explained – Why the Animated Series Is very Different From the Comics

A few weeks before Star Wars Celebration 2022, the words of a new animated anthology series called Star Wars: The Jedi Story broke. The series shares its name with one of the earliest and most influential cartoons in the Star Wars extended universe. But now that the series has been officially announced, the new Jedi story is a very different project, focusing on multiple Jedi knights from the Prequel era.

Tales of Jedi is a name that has a deep meaning in Star Wars mythology. The original Dark Horse Comics series was one of the first Star Wars stories to embody the ancient history of the Jedi Order and the war with the Sith. The new anime series doesn’t seem to be much more in common than the title, but there is always the potential for deeper connections. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the original story of the Jedi cartoons and why they are so different from the latest Star Wars cartoons.

Jedi Story: What We Know About the Anime Series

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi is an anthology series of animations set at various points in the Prequel era. The series consists of six episodes, half focusing on Ahsoka Tano (as usual Ashley Eckstein screaming) and the other half focusing on Count Dooku before descending to the dark side. I’m guessing. Count Dooku’s Padawan Qui-Gon Jinn also played a major role in the series, with both Liam Neeson and Neeson’s son Michael taking charge of his voice, depending on the period.

This series highlights three distinct points in Ahsoka’s career, including early childhood. Janina Gavankar, who played Aiden Verso in Star Wars Battlefront II, speaks to Ahsoka’s mother in the first episode. The second introduces Ahsoka during the Clone Wars, and the third reveals the battle between the old Ahsoka and the Inquisitor.

It’s unclear if the Tales of the Jedi is a standalone project or if writer Dave Filoni is planning multiple seasons. In the latter case, the series may branch beyond the scope of the first part and explore other characters and periods. Perhaps even a hero or villain in a Jedi cartoon story? Let’s shift our focus to them.

Jedi Story: Comic Book

The Original Star Wars: The Jedi Story is a series of comic story arcs published by Dark Horse between 1993 and 1998. This series was first invented by writer Tom Weich, who is considered one of the core architects of Star Wars. Weich’s first Star Wars project, Dark Empire, was a sequel six years after the Jedi’s return event, and Weich included references to the ancient Jedi Knights and the Sith in its series. These references were the basis on which the Tales Objedi was built.

Tales of Jedi was 4,000 years before the movie era, when the ancient Jedi Order was at war with the Sith (at that time not a secret, but a peculiar race of power-sensitive aliens). The order will be set later). Later, Tales of Jedi Ark digs deeper into the Star Wars timeline, exploring the 5000-year-old period of the film.

Together with co-author Kevin J. Anderson (who also wrote the novel Jedi Academy Trilogy at the same time), Weich fleshed out an era of Star Wars history that fans knew little about at the time. And while Tales of Jedi is rendered non-canon like most extended universes, it’s a series that continues to have a strong influence on modern stories.

The Tales of Jedi were set primarily 4000 years before the movie era, when the ancient Jedi Order was at war with the Sith.

Jedi comic story plot

Tales of Jedi is an anthology series that, on the surface, focuses on different characters and conflicts from the Old Republic era, but the different stories are connected to form a comprehensive story. This series is mainly about the rise and fall of Urick Keldroma, a Jedi knight from Alderaan who has fallen to the dark side. In the course of the series, Keldroma fights the Sith Empire and falls in love with his fellow Jedi Flea Sunrider, but she only succumbs to the temptation of darkness.

Ulic Qel-Droma is a typical corrupt Jedi Night.

The story of Qel-Droma is intertwined with the story of another former Jedi, Exar Kun, who turned to the dark side. Kun was originally created by Anderson for the Jedi Academy trilogy. This shows that his spirit was connected to the abandoned temple of Yavin 4 satellite, which temporarily functioned as a base for the Rebel Alliance. Anderson and Weich have worked together to integrate Kun into a comprehensive story of the Jedi storyline. The comic introduces the power of Lord Sith and reveals how he achieved his ultimate goal.

The Jedi story proved to be very influential in the franchise and established an important part of the Jedi / Sith myth before the first part of Star Wars began to cover the field. Among other things, these cartoons cover critical conflicts such as the Friedonnad Uprising and the Great Hyperspace War, and showcase the ancient Sith Empire and Mandalore warriors. In particular, the Tales of Jedi proved that even thousands of years before the Luke and Anakin Skywalker era, some of the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy fought the influence of the dark side.

You may be wondering where the Knights of the Old Republic game fits. The name KOTOR is actually derived from the comic because it is a subtitle of one of the main stories of the Jedi Story Arc. The game itself is essentially a direct sequel to the comic. The former Knights of the Old Republic are set up about 40 years after the end of the Jedi story.

KOTOR is based on the Jedi-Mandalorian confrontation featured in the comics and introduces Lord Sith Darth Revan and his disciple Darth Malak. Like Exar Kun and Ulic-Qel Droma before them, Revan and Malak were prominent Jedi Knights who fell into the temptation of Dark Side. The exact reason for their common collapse was not revealed until the release of the Old Republic, an MMORPG set centuries later. In the process, the Old Republic is associated with the myth of the Sith Empire, which was introduced in the Jedi story.

Long before Darth Maul, Exar Kun demonstrated the power of a double-bladed lightsaber.

KOTOR puts the player in a very grumpy droid shoe to prevent the hero of memory loss and the Jedi rug tag band, smuggler, Mandalorian, and Malak from unleashing one of the most deadly superweapons in the galaxy. Wrap. The sequel, set ten years later, shifts the focus to the shameful Jedi known as the Jedi asylum as they fight the emerging Sith triumvirate.

The KOTOR game is a sequel to the Jedi story, but there are some storytelling discrepancies between the two. Tales of Jedi was released before the first part of Star Wars was realized, but KOTOR arrived a year after Episode II appeared in the theater. When the Jedi story was published, George Lucas did not establish basic details like the idea that “a dozen” was the honorific adopted by all Sith Lords, not just Vader. .. KOTOR’s technology and architecture are also very different from Tales of Jedi. The latter introduces the world of Star Wars in a much more primitive and technologically undeveloped state. In this state, the influence of Westerns and Samourai movies is even more apparent.
