Tears of the Kingdom Appears to Take Place a Few Years After Breath of the Wild

Today’s new Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom trailer has a lot to analyze and speculate about. You can now see some of the characters and locations from . The latest trailer puts Tears of the Kingdom at least a few years after Breath of the Wild.

WARNING: PLEASE FOLLOW BELOW THE TRAILER FOR BREATH OF THE WILD SPOILERS!

It’s already clear from past gameplay showcases and trailers that Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom has changed. Sky Island appears to be ripped from the ground, opening a huge chasm and other landscape changes have occurred since I last played. It’s been difficult to tell exactly how much of Ganon’s magic is, and how much of the changes we’ve seen are normal passages of time. There are some clear clues that reveal that at least a few years have passed, and those clues were given to us by a friend of Link’s from the last game.

I am specifically talking about Sidon, Liju and Turin. Three of her characters we met in Breath of the Wild, who also appear in this trailer. We don’t get a glimpse of them, but it’s enough to show that all three characters have aged meaningfully since the last game. The most obvious of the three is Riju, who has grown significantly taller, more muscular, and appears to have had his hair cut since his last appearance.

A little more subtle, Turin has also grown. If you recall, Turin is the son of Teva, the successor to Revali. In today’s trailer, it looks like Turin has taken his father’s mantle as a champion and is now fighting alongside Link. He has a fierce expression on his face. In fact, his overall demeanor seems a little more mature than before.

Finally, let’s look at Prince Sidon. Sidon was already an adult when we met him in Breath of the Wild, so he’s the least changed of the three. is wearing the same crown he wore in Breath of the Wild, instead of a tiny circlet. This could indicate that Drephan died in Tears of the Kingdom and Sidon is now the ruler of the Zora people.

We don’t get many clear shots of Sidon in the trailer, but here’s a shot of him, Riju, and Turin together. In particular, a few seconds into the trailer, a club appears near the bottom of the screen, indicating that Yunobo is with the three in this cutscene.

In fact, it’s worth pointing out that Sidon doesn’t wear the big crown in his official game artwork. It was released today as well, indicating that he could be on the throne at some point in Tears of the Kingdom’s storyline.
