The Tony Awards Are Sunday. Here’s How to Watch.

When are the Tony Awards?

Each year, the Tony Awards are held on Sunday night, recognizing the best plays and musicals ever staged on Broadway.

The main event, with plenty of song-and-dance numbers between prizes, will take place at 8 PM ET and will be televised on CBS and streamed on Paramount+. And before that, there’s a pre-show, starting at 6:30 PM ET, with an array of awards for design and creative work. It streams on Pluto TV.

This year is different in several respects.

First, the ceremony will take place in a new location, the United Palace, a former movie theater in Washington Heights, one of Manhattan’s northernmost neighborhoods. The reason for the relocation is primarily economic. We found United Palace to be much cheaper to rent than Radio City Music Hall, where shows are frequented.

Second, the writers are going on strike, which initially threatened to upset the Tony family. confused Other television award shows. To get the Writers Guild of America’s consent not to picket the telecast, the Tony Awards had to pledge not to use any scripts during the ceremony. As a result, we sing more and talk less than usual.

The show will be hosted by Ariana DeVose for the second year in a row and is expected to feature more dancing and less jokes this year due to the absence of a writer. Last year, she won an Academy Award for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story.” One of them was nominated for a Tony Award. This year’s Tony’s preshow will be hosted by Julianne Hough (POTUS) and Skylar Astin (Spring Awakening).

Each of the five shows nominated for Best Musical will perform one song. They are “& Juliet”, “Kimberly Akimbo”, “New York, New York”, “Shucked” and “Some Like It Hot”. And all four shows nominated for Best Musical Revival: ‘Camelot,’ ‘Into the Woods,’ ‘Parade,’ and ‘Sweeney Todd.’

But wait, there’s more! Lea Michelle will lead the revival of “Funny Girl,” which was released a year ago. The cast of the jukebox musical “Beautiful Noise”, which depicts Neil Diamond, will also appear. And Joaquina Carcango, one of last year’s Tony Award winners, sings along with her tribute segment.

Broadway still struggles to recover from prolonged coronavirus shutdowns, with audience numbers still 17 percent below pre-pandemic levels, but producers use Tony Awards to introduce latest shows to large audiences regarded as an important tool.

Tony is also a vehicle for elevating theater as an art form, often boosting the careers of the artists involved. Awards and nominations help plays to be performed in local theaters and taught in colleges, and televised performances help musicals to sell tickets and tours.

The Tony Awards, named after actress and philanthropist Antoinette Perry, are sponsored by the Broadway League and the American Theater Wing. Winners are chosen by voters, but this year 769 winners were selected, including producers, investors, actors, screenwriters, directors, designers and many others who make a living or livelihood related to theater. selected.

This Sunday’s ceremony will be the 76th Annual Tony Awards.
