Trezor confirms refusing coinjoin UTXOs to protect privacy of others

Following reports of censorship from hardware wallet maker Trezor, crypto slate Trezor refuses some UTXOs to enter the coinjoin coordinator to protect the privacy of other users.

A Trezor representative said:

“We also recognize our responsibility to prevent UTXOs already under surveillance from violating the privacy of other participants because they are associated with serious crimes.”

The company further acknowledged that the issue is a “sensitive issue.” However, they stressed that all denials are done with the goal of “supporting coinjoin transactions is to provide privacy to individual users.”

Trezor also confirmed that the on-chain data analytics firm did not receive “random coins.” Instead, a ‘risk score’ is returned based on ‘UTXOs entering coinjoin’. Based on the risk score, some of her UTXOs may be rejected if flagged as “under review”.

“If UTXOs that are known to be under surveillance enter a coinjoin, the coordinator will reject them. Nothing could be worse than this.

Coinjoin is enabled through Tor, an anonymizing network, and uses blocking filters, so we cannot see individual users or track or report on user activity. ”
