Trinity Trigger Is a Rare JRPG That Lets You Save the World with Your Friends

Japanese role-playing games are more available and accessible than ever before. However, few traditional games allow multiple people to form a party and play the story together. Square Enix’s Mana franchise and Bandai Namco’s Tales of series are probably the best known of the past. Among several other single-shot titles, Trinity Trigger aims to add to that short list. . The combat seems lacking in depth and it remains to be seen how interesting the world will be, but Trinity Trigger’s first impressions show potential.

A young man named Cyan appears in Trinity Trigger as a Chaos Warrior, traveling with his friends Elise and Xanthis to the world of Trinity, searching for the weapons of the gods and preparing for a fateful battle with the warriors. increase. order. Each party he member has a partner called a trigger. This is a more-or-less animal-like companion who is fully self-aware, vocal, and transforms into a weapon. All party members eventually gain access to all types of weapons by exploring dungeons, but all have their own specialties. Cyan specializes in swords, Elise specializes in bows, and Xanthis specializes in axes. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to explore the entire dungeon, but you can expect puzzles and boss battles along the way.

During the guided demonstration, I was in a snow village called Hoprad. There, townsfolk have been trying to deal with monsters in the nearby forest. After believing the beast to determine their weather, the townsfolk are sacrificing citizens as tribute in hopes of stopping a snowstorm that is damaging the town’s harvest. There didn’t seem to be much to do in town after that. At least there were shops to buy supplies and people to talk to, but I didn’t go through any side quests along the way.

Its biggest obvious problem is that co-op will only be available locally at launch.

The gameplay is presented in an isometric view with real-time action combat and is ultimately very easy and beginner-friendly. The attack consumes stamina, but tiredness did not prevent you from swinging your weapon at the enemy. But it is consumed, so I needed a little ingenuity to use it. During combat, normal enemies only have a depleting health bar above their heads, but bosses are also equipped with a stagger bar, temporarily stunning enemies while the party can unleash an all-out attack. Bosses also have weapon weaknesses to discover to deal extra damage. We encourage you to experiment with the weapons you need to prioritize your combat and figure out which character to control.

Besides stamina, there are two other gauges that must be managed during combat. One of which is his ultimate ability to release a devastating “super” attack that was ready to be released once my weapon glowed, the other strengthens my weapon for a short time. bottom. Unlike most of his JRPGs, there seemed to be no magic, spells, or elemental damage of any kind. This also includes healing. All healing is done using potions, and other status effects such as poison are also avoided, so I found myself perusing the menu a lot during combat.

Trinity Trigger wasn’t a technically advanced game, and while I had no complaints about its performance docked to the Switch and played, it was visually grainy. In general, this presentation isn’t trying to stand out outside of stunning character portraits during important and voice-acted character dialogue, but if you’re concerned with getting the best visuals, or on the go If you’re going to give up the convenience of playing on, I’d rather see the PlayStation 5 or PC versions that become available instead.

Trinity Trigger seems like a no-nonsense JRPG from what I’ve played. Its biggest obvious problem is that co-op will only be available locally at launch. It feels like a huge missed opportunity knowing you can’t. It offers something that most games in this genre don’t, and like most games I come across, I’m interested in the story and characters that exist in the world. I can’t tell you about it, but I hope it will be a highlight. Either way, JRPGs can be intimidating, and Trinity Trigger looks like a great example of the relatively rare kind that brings friends along.
