During the pandemic, the number one question I’ve been asked by curious and insight-seekers was, “How do you make it?” I gave the same answer each time. So I want to encourage people to be the best version of themselves. Food has been an incredible vehicle for me to advocate for that way of life.

freeman Going forward, I think Southern soul food wherever it is will look more like farm-to-table cuisine that incorporates local, seasonal ingredients and supports more local Black farmers. This is the direction I’m heading. We don’t want to say we’re going back to our roots. I also think it will be more community oriented.

A lot of the time in the food industry we are all in competition. But I think we can go further by sharing information as a community. And I think that spirit carries over in front of the domestic workers and incoming customers. I hope more entrepreneurs and restaurateurs will go in that direction.

Williams As long as we share information, we are on the same page. We also need to share our own stories with real impartiality. In other words, there is an African proverb. At some point in our lives, as American African descendants, we have to own our own stories. Inclusion is confused with fairness for some strange reason. We can include you in a lot of things, but just because you’re invited and you have no stake doesn’t mean we share the responsibility of making sure it works.

My hope is that through food we can create agency, ownership and common ground so that we can share the same experience across race, economic and gender differences. increase. As black people, we were and still are cooking, how would you like to set the table?
