market analyst canalis It was published There is a report showing that US PC shipments are down 12% in Q3 2022. But things weren’t uniform, with desktop sales up 1%, laptop sales down 14%, and tablet sales down 1%. According to Canalys, a total of 17.8 million PCs were sold in the US in the third quarter. It’s also interesting to see the successes and failures of the top five PC makers.
It’s well documented that consumers aren’t as interested in purchasing a desktop, laptop, tablet, or component as they were just a year ago. As most countries have lifted from pandemic lockdowns in 2020/2021, the appetite for consumer hardware and software to work and play from home has started to wane. Last year, however, the impact on consumer confidence and disposable income was even greater, largely due to the Ukraine/Russia war and its impact on energy prices, inflation and disposable income.
Embedded charts covering Q1 2020 to Q3 2022 help provide an overview of the situation and trend lines. Canalys Research his analyst Brian Lynch said:
Lynch also underscored that the previously resilient commercial segment has begun to wane, marking the first year-over-year decline (2%) evidenced by these new numbers. Consumers are under pressure, impacting the segment, while businesses are cautiously implementing cost-cutting measures. As a result, Canalys believes the lifespan of the device will be extended as soon as possible.
Entering the fourth quarter of 2022, Canalys analysts are not seeing a “green shoot” of recovery. Consumers are expected to cut spending on expensive technology this holiday season, and big promotions will be needed to clear inventory. The expected slow recovery in the education segment in 2023 also indicates that the downward trend in shipments seen in 2022 will continue into the first half of 2023.
Looking at the relative fortunes of the Big 5 PC makers, there are some stark contrasts in the US market. Dell continues to hold his number one position in market share in the Americas, surpassing his HP in second place last year. However, this really has more to do with HP’s even worse decline in sales (-23.2%) than Dell’s performance (-16.9% growth).
Apple and Acer were the clear winners in the 2022 five PC race. It looks like Apple had an amazing year with an annual growth rate of 26.5%. Analysts at Canalys attributed the significant progress to “fulfilling backlogs from a short supply Q2” and the arrival of the new Apple M2 device in retail stores.
Nothing was said about Acer’s 14% growth rate other than “strong.” But Acer must be getting something right with a product for the US market that its competitors that make Windows PCs haven’t. We’ve reviewed several Acer gaming laptops this year, and while they’ve been consistently decent, their US sales success has to do with the mix of Chromebooks, thin and light designs, and convertibles. There is a possibility that
If you’re into tablets, Canalys breaks down the numbers for these handy portable connected devices individually. A key observation in the US tablet market for Q3 2022 was the advance in the Amazon Fire tablet range (19.5% growth), which appears to have come at the expense of Apple and Samsung. It’s also interesting to note that shipments of are down 12% in the most recent quarter.
